Volunteer With Us
We are in search of individuals in the Des Moines metro area who are interested in building relationships with their neighbors across differences. We seek volunteers who will adopt an attitude of life-long learning and cultural humility as they serve in the program.
Get Involved
There are a few ways to get involved with Hope to Shine Iowa. We'd love to have you participate!
Volunteer Benefits
As a volunteer, you'll have an opportunity to:
-
Learn about another's life experience and culture firsthand.
-
Develop a friendship with your partner and get to know them and their family.
-
Witness progress and celebrate both big and small victories together.
-
Gain valuable teaching and tutoring experience.
-
Make Central Iowa more welcoming.
-
Co-create a sense of belonging and community.

We do not require our volunteers to have previous teaching experience or knowledge of a second language. Volunteers attend an orientation to the program before they start meeting with their partners and participate in monthly learning opportunities with others in the program.
Volunteers must be:

-
able to meet regularly with their partner once per week for at least three months.
-
flexible, patient, and comfortable working with language learners with varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
-
